Santa Monica City Services Building will be the first municipal Living Building in the U.S.
Our City Services Building project in Santa Monica reached an important milestone this month: the structure is on course to be the first building in Southern California to have a composting toilet system and to make drinking water from rainwater. It is also the first municipal building project in the nation to tackle certification under the rigorous Living Building Challenge sustainability program. This means that it will achieve the most ambitious 3rd party sustainability certification, including net positive water, energy and healthy building materials.
“There aren’t a lot of public agencies registered for the Living Building Challenge. This project is already a model for others,” said Kathleen Smith, Vice President, International Living Future Institute.
